Driven by desperation to save his dying sister, Evelon, from a mysterious illness, Cass risks everything by venturing into the hostile DMZ, where myths like him are hunted. There, he confronts formidable Grafters and unleashes his dormant fire powers. He also encounters Bellevar Academy, where myths like him are trained and sheltered. However, this hope is shattered when Evelon is captured and taken to the Arbiter, while Cass is rended from his powers. 

While Cass trains to regain his abilities, he discovers a hidden past and a cosmic prophecy about Evelon being the "First Stone" and a looming Nightmare. Meanwhile, Evelon is forced into the Huntress's brutal training program within the Prism Spire, where she learns more about the Hexarchy, her own latent powers, and the truth of her brother's character. Both siblings are led towards an inevitable confrontation that will determine the fate of their world, as well as their future relationship.
